Peleg Howland

Page Updated Friday August 19, 2011

Peleg Howland was one of Brampton's earliest merchants arriving in Canada in 1829. He and his brother William Pearce opened several businesses throughout Toronto and Chinguacousy townships including Brampton and Stanley Mills (now a ghost town). The 1877 Historical Atlas of Peel County states that Peleg took ownership of the store previously occupied by Abijah Lewis and operated a successful business for many years at the corner of Main Street and Queen Street. He held several prominent positions in Peel County through the years including; being elected President of the Agricultural Society of Upper Canada, Manager of the Dominion Bank, and member of the Brampton Council. His brother, also known as Sir William Pearce Howland, was the only Father of Confederation born in the United States. Peleg Howland, son of Jonathan Howland whose ancestor John Howland arrived on the Mayflower from England in 1620, died July 7, 1882 at the age of 74.
